CUNY Management won't put a financial offer on the bargaining table. Not EVEN a bad offer. Their plan is, again, one of endless delays. They think we are powerless. They think that organizing faculty is like herding cats. They treat us with contempt.
Don't get mad, get EVEN.
Think you have to wait for the union to take further action? Think again-- you ARE the union! You can EVEN accelerate the contract negotiation right now. It requires no extra work, no faxes, no picket signs, no petitions, at this point. It doesn't EVEN require that you do anything you wouldn't have to do otherwise.
Here is what you can do EVEN NOW:
Whenever there is data for faculty to submit online over a period of days, submit the data ONLY on an EVEN-numbered day.
This applies to GRADES, ATTENDANCE information, ACADEMIC WARNING information, etc.
Submit this information only on an EVEN-numbered day. Furthermore, do NOT submit this on the last day, even if the last day is EVEN: otherwise you won't be distinguishable from the typical faculty procrastinator. Even Days only: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30!
OK, this is easy, but what does it do? How does it help?
Here's the deal:
By cooperating on this on a very large CUNY-wide scale, we can show that faculty have the capability to undertake organized work actions. Neither side wants to get to that point, but as long as management believes that this is not something we're capable of, our leaders will continue to be at a disadvantage at the bargaining table.
Note that this is not a Taylor Law violation. Everyone can meet their contractual obligations this way. This is not a slowdown, or attempt to overload computers or the system. This is harmless, legal, easy. This is simply an "exercise" in collective action.
And we can use the exercise.
And management will benefit from the instruction.
